Secoisolariciresinol Diglucoside (SDG) from flaxseed in the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus

This review focuses on the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) development type 1 and 2 diabetes its treatment with secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) isolated from flaxseed which is an antioxidant suppresses phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) gene expression, a ratelimiting enzyme in gluconeogenesis liver. Role ROS [diabetic prone Bio Breeding (BBdp) rats streptozotocin-induced diabetic (STZ) (Zucker fatty female rats, ZDF rats)] has been discussed. Oxidative stress assessed by measuring serum pancreatic malondialdehyde (MDA), chemiluminescence (pancreatic-CL) radical producing activity white blood cells (WBCCL). Diagnosis was made hyperglycaemia glucosuria. Incidence 100 % SDZ 72 BBdp age days. Development associated increases MDA, WBC-CL pancreatic-CL glycated haemoglobin (HbA1 c). SDG prevented 75 STZ 71 20 at days rats. However, 80 did not develop age, developed later on, suggesting that delays Treatment decreased levels pancreatic-CL. In conclusion, mediated through oxidative prevention or delay could be due to suppressant effect PEPCK enzyme. Lignan complex contains 34 38 effective lowering glucose HbA1 c humans.
